Mexican Dessert Churros for breakfast

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

When you are in Mexico City, you have to try this churros place called El Moro. El Moro is a well-known chain in Mexico City selling churros all day long. Since it opens all day long, I decided to go there for breakfast as soon as I woke up. Have you eaten churros for breakfast? It was my first time eating churros as breakfast and I actually really enjoyed it because the line was really short and for those who like to eat a light breakfast, it was not as heavy as a meal as you might think.

Churro is a fried dough pastry usually dipped in sugar. It is not clear where churros are originally from, but one theory is that the Portuguese brought the culinary technique to make churros from China. The Portuguese most likely used the new culinary techniques they learned from the Chinese to understand how to alter dough to make youtiao—a Chinese fried dough. The old version of making churros was most likely transferred to Spain and then modified to the current version of churros. These days, churros are popular in many parts of the world, especially in Spain, Mexico, Southwestern United States, France, and the Philippines.

The dough for churros is made of flour, water, and salt. The dough is fried until it becomes crunchy, and then it is usually dipped into sugar or cinnamon. What I really liked about El Moro was that it is an open kitchen, so you can watch the churros-making process from A to Z live. It was interesting that the bakers make a long spiral shape first, and then cut it into pieces.

The churros in El Moro were different from the ones that I’ve tried before. They were much longer and thinner. Because it was freshly fried at the spot, it was warm and soft inside and crunchy outside. I thought it would be too heavy, but it was not. It was a perfect amount of sweetness. The portion was really big. Because I did not know how big the churros are in El Moro, I ordered a combo, and I was shocked when I saw the gigantic size of 4 churros with hot chocolate. I would say each churro is about 40cm long. It was quite fun to hold and eat each one while hearing the crunchy sound. It tasted even better with hot chocolate. At El Moro, customers could also choose different dipping sauces such as caramel or chocolate depending on their preference. I personally don’t like too much sweetness, so the churros without any dipping sauce was great for me. This is definitely a must-have if you are in CDMX (Ciudad de México)! You can eat it for breakfast like I did or for a snack!
